BYE-bye sunny sky.

Welcome to oil paint on canvas approach number two. Due to how long my first attempt, my flower girl took me to finish, I downsized my canvas quite a bit for this one. The colors for this one were pretty fun to work with. There was a lot of mixing involved, & getting the sky to gradually get darker & darker was quite a task. It's a piece that symbolizes how quickly times of happiness can turn to times of dismay, sometimes by the loss of just one thing.

I'm sure by now some of you might have wondered what my cover photo is all about. 

Well, it's actually a painting I did on my bedroom wall. 

[Don't mind some of the clutter, apparently the maid called in sick that day.]

A friend of mine once told me to have a "fun" room while I still can, before I get married and have to share & whatnot, & that's exactly what I've tried to do!

Unfortunately (to some degree), I've upgraded to bigger and better bedroom furniture, and my dresser now covers the painting. But, the painting had a pretty long run, and was definitely nice to look at. 

Hopefully my parents will keep it around after I move out, and visitors to the future guest bedroom will be able to enjoy it.

Street Artist: Bumblebee

Article: The Bumblebee Interview; Unurth Street Art

 

Bumblebee is a popular street artist in Los Angeles. He was first recognized for his bee hives in empty payphone boxes that popped up around Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Las Vegas. Bumblebee realized the phone companies were removing the phones, but leaving the boxes stranded, and decided to reconnect them with people once again.

With his work, Bumblebee strives to deliver messages to the people, some of which including the decline in bee colonies and the decline in newspapers. The paint just allows for a fun way to get these ideas out to society.

His next project consists of using abandoned newspaper stands to communicate with the public once again. Each stand will have a page of his book,

 "The Story of How Things Came to Bee".

The book will also have a web page where fans can become better connected with the story and can find the actual locations of where to find each new page.

In his interview with Unurth Street Art, Bumblebee stated,

"Street art is often feared and critisized as vandalism, and I believe that through my work I can convince people otherwise."

Street art brings beauty back to places that have lost it.

It's more than grafitti, it's more than just paint, it's

street ART.

This week shares the work of others. Whales are truly fascinating. Being able to capture these giant, remarkable creatures like this definitely makes for an awesome photo. It really puts into perspective just how big this animal really is in comparison to other things in the ocean. It's wild that they can even swim and jump with their immense size! The Blue Whale is the largest mammal known throughout history, weighing in at 150 tons and reaching 110 feet long. When whales slap their tails on the surface of the water, it is said to be a warning of danger nearby. When vacationing in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, I heard they had amazing whale watching. Unfortunately, the time I was there was not the right season for it, so it remains something that's still on my bucket list!

A while back, I had a coupon for the craft store and picked up a big canvas on a whim. I then learned that canvas requires oil paint because it's thick enough to not be absorbed into the canvas, and realized oil paint is actually fairly expensive. In all reality, the coupon really cost me money rather than saved it. Touché coupon, touché. So, that led to my first attempt at oil painting,

my FLOWER girl.

 Oil paint is much trickier to work with that I would have assumed. Most colors that you want you have to mix together yourself, which makes the process much longer. Since it paints on so thick you can only work with very small areas at a time, which also adds time to the process. I'm not really sure where this idea came from, just one of those "trying to fall asleep, mind racing" kind of thoughts. I pictured a girl with flowers as eyes, and it just progressed from there. Most people that see it ask if it was meant to be a self-portrait or some sort, but when I pictured it I actually saw her as a blonde, so no, considering I'm a brunette. (Or kind of a redhead if you count the dye jobs.) Brown hair just went better with all the colors, so it 'tis what it 'tis!  

RED LIPS.

Along with my newfound obsession with lipstick, comes this new favorite saying. Lipstick was a terrifying thing to me, & I envied those that could pull it off. Pictured is my first night as a red- lipped lady, (aside from the numerous dance recitals wearing me to wear stage makeup, but that doesn't count).  Heck, that stage makeup is probably what made me believe I couldn't pull off red lips in the first place! The picture obviously didn't need me, the rich red was more than enough to steal the show. Apparently, lipstick has now become "my thing". If I don't wear it people question why. I guess you never truly know about some things until you try! Red lips are timeless, as the beautiful Marilyn Monroe showed us years ago. Color is something to experiment with, not to avoid. Find your skin's perfect shades, and embrace beauty.
